If one expects diagrams of dissected hearts adorning walls of a cardiologist?s clinic, this one is different. Its Swami Vivekanand, in every stage of his life as a reformer ?saint, looking at you from all angles as you sit in the plush clinic of Dr.Atul Chokshi in the heart of busy Brooklyn in New York City.
And, the inscriptions below the portraits are hard to escape ? Doing is very good, but that comes from thinking, Fill the brain, therefore, with high thoughts, highest ideals, place them day and night before you and out of that will come great work. That Dr.Chokshi is immersed in. The cardiologists heart lies hundreds of miles away, in KRISHNA Heart Institute that he has established in Ahmedabad. It is here that his great work is taking shape. When people take their near and dear ones to this hospital, it is one prayer that they come out with ? Whoever built this hospital, God Bless him. It is this prayer that keeps me going, says Dr Chokshi, as he gets in and out of the consulting room, checking patients who wait for his healing touch, wait for their doctor who has won many a heart in an alien land that he made his own year ago.
But, Dr. Chokshi isn?t just running a hospital. He is creating a beacon of inspiration, driving people to walk the road less traveled ? the road to spreading happiness among mankind. My work did not end with setting up KRISHNA Heart Institute. It was just the beginning. The road ahead is difficult as I am on a Mission that?s not easy ? to inspire. I need to inspire more and more people to be a part of this project, to reach out to the suffering masses, to help those in distress, says Dr.Chokshi.
And, the cardiologist knows the hearts anatomy well. He knows sympathy will not help, nor will criticism for the country, it should come from the heart. If have wielded the scalpel all this while, it is time now to influence hearts in another way. My mission is to inspire, to make them realize the need to reach out to mankind, says Dr.Chokshi.
His mission statement is as the man himself ? God does not want us to be motivated. He wants us to be inspired. You don?t need to do anything, but you should be relentlessly active. And, now it?s no stopping the man who draws his strength from the Bhagvad Gita. I am on a mission. Even if I go bankrupt, I will continue my struggle. For, I know the Gita by heart. And, it teaches me not to expect the fruits action.
What Dr. Chokshi has set his sight on is, to inspire people who can sponsor poor patients. This is the message I want to send out to the world. If I get 40 people who are ready to help, we can operate on 40 patients, he says.
Spearing the world is his new objective telling people about his project, convincing them about the need to sponsor treatment of the poor. This is the message I want to send out to the world. Even if I can convince them to pay anything between $ 1,000 and $ 5,000, I can carry on with the treatment of the poor. And, every day a life is saved, be it that of a farmer or a larriwala, says the doctor.
He already has a couple from Jhagadia area of Bharuch district in Gujarat , who are identifying people with heart problems and sending them to the institute. And he wants KRISHNA Heart Institute to be not just another hospital. For him, it should become a motivator that would spawn many such hospitals across the country. I considered the institute a pilot project that can inspire others to take up more such ventures. It is not just about treating patients at the institute. It should be an example to others of what can be achieved if one has the will, if one is inspired enough, he says, it is all that Dr.Chokshi himself stands for. If he has visited India as many as 36 times in the last six years to set up the institute, sacrificing his family life and his own interests in the US, he is undaunted by the fact that problems may arise anytime. The US , government helps people hit by natural disaster like a hurricane. This does not happen in India. The risks are immense, he says. But, so is his will. If he has defied his financial consultants advice not to start the project in India , he believes that it was not business motive that led him to establish the institute. I did it because I love my country to the last drop of my blood, he says. And, it was built as much care as he takes of his patients. the hospital is custom ? made, not designed by architects but by cardiologists. Dr.Chokshi says to bring advanced technology to India and he has shown that what a strong will can achieve. The KRISHNA Heart Institute has some of the best facilities interventional and non?interventional cardiology, including the Philips H5000 F Swing Arm, fully digital cardiovascular Angiography laboratory ,the first of its kind in Europe and Asia.
He has a 17?bed Medical ICU equipped with Siemens S3000 ventilators, Hewlett Packard monitors with all non?invasive modules, B.Braun syringe infusion pumps, Data scope Intra ? aortic balloon pumps and acute MI standing programmes. The department of Non ? Invasive Cardiology and Outpatient Services have been coupled together to provide the most sophisticated, radio-diagnosis in the field of cardiology. This includes computerized stress test, 2-d Echo, Portable Echo, Holter Electro-cardiograph and high-end ECG Machine. The Institute Research wing has made significant contributions in the field of research while its operating rooms have four state?of-the?art operation theaters. A lot of care has been taken to maintain high standards in sterility and infection control, with a plasma sterilizer, the first of its kind in India that replaces the bio?hazardous ETO technology.
